Hair follicles have protein receptors for vitamin D. This is why there has been much focus on investigating if there is a role for Vitamin D in hair loss treatment  and if it  stimulates dormant hair follicles. It may even help stem cells as they differentiate into hair follicle cells.

However, this does not mean that individuals with baldness or thinning should rely on Vitamin D supplements for hair loss help.  Eating a well rounded diet should provide an adequate source of vitamin D. Also, UVB rays convert a cholesterol known as 7-dehydrocholesterol into vitamin D3 which is further processed by the liver and kidneys to render it active.

The doses of vitamin d that might be needed to impact hair might be to high. high oral dosages of vitamin D can be toxic and even life threatening. For this reason researchers are hoping that their efforts will lead to a topical drug formulation which can be used as a hair loss medication.
