Q. Strip surgery versus FUE hair transplant methods: Is the strip method for hair transplantation older and outdated compared to Follicular Unit Extraction?
Strip surgery versus FUE hair transplant methods: Hair restoration surgery is constantly evolving.  Strip surgery is a hair transplant method currently considered to be the more conventional method for performing a hair restoration surgery . It emerged around the late 1980s, when hair transplant methods were relatively new, and was quite revolutionary as a microsurgical technique since it used follicular unit grafts (groupings of 1-4 follicles) instead of larger chunks of hair.

Follicular Unit Extraction is more recent development. It removes follicles directly from head and body surfaces. And unlike strip surgery it does not leave a linear scar.  Also, hair can be taken from anywhere on the head, rather than just the lower regions.

Strip surgery versus FUE hair transplant methods

And here at Dermhair Clinic, we have developed a specialized area of FUE known as Advanced Follicular Unit Extraction for harvesting body hair as well as for consistent extraction of tightly curled Afro-textured haired individuals. Body hair transplant is particularly useful for patients who require a much greater number of grafts, beyond what is available on their head.  Examples include severely bald individuals (Norwoods 6-7) and patients who have already had prior hair surgeries which used many of their head donor follicles.

In considering Strip surgery versus FUE hair transplant methods, it should be noted that each hair transplant method can be viewed in terms of the specific benefits they offer to address patient objectives and issues of concern.

This video captures the thinking well:

Strip surgery versus FUE hair transplant methods
This patient in his before photo has had both strip surgery and FUE extractions. While the thin strip surgery scar is still visible,, the FUE extractions are not visible at a buzz cut*

FUE hair transplant methods are done by removing individual groups of follicles using tiny punches
In FUE hair transplant, individual follicular units are removed one by one. Surgeons are able to select the types of hair they want to use. And there is no linear scarring, unlike strip surgery.
