KCAL 9 News Hosts Dr. Sanusi Umar for a Conversation About Hair Loss
“I can’t help noticing you’re a hair restoration expert—but you’re bald,” said Sandra Mitchell, a KCAL 9 News anchor in their conversation about hair loss with Dr U. She and her co-host Dave Gonzalez welcomed highly regarded hair restoration expert and dermatologist Dr. Sanusi Umar as a guest on their segment. “That’s what got me interested in the field,” Umar replied, “but I cannot perform [hair transplant] on myself.” Thus, he became motivated to help other people who battle pattern baldness and other causes of hair loss.

KCAL 9 News - Conversation About Hair Loss
Dr. U speaks to KCAL 9 news about ways to prevent hair loss. Although it is fundamentally caused by genetics, environmental factors can speed up the process

Losing hair is a prevalent source of emotional, social, and professional tumult. It is normal for this cosmetic adversity to lead to damaged self-esteem, mood swings, social withdrawal, and even depression. The millions of individuals who suffer genetic balding, thinning from an underlying illness, or hair loss from an accident or burn are on a continual search for a viable and lasting method of hair restoration. For men and women alike, the hunt is overwhelming and seems never-ending. Ultimately, there is no real “cure” for androgenic alopecia. However, some simple daily efforts to promote healthy hair growth and reduce hair loss are out there and doable by anyone. For the marginal cases of thinning, the remedies are easy. But for extreme hair loss cases, the remedies become more complex.

“There are a number of causes of hair loss,” Dr. Umar imparted on the show during their conversation about hair loss, “but there are a number of things you can do to minimize the extent.” Some of the low-maintenance hair restoration treatments he divulged are consuming a healthy diet, taking vitamins to help with balanced nutrition, shielding your scalp against the sun’s harsh UV rays, avoiding abrasive chemicals, and conditioning the hair well.

In the event of serious hair loss, like advanced hairline recession or crown balding, Dr. Umar recommended the FDA-approved drug, Rogaine (minoxidil). This topically administered treatment has both a men’s and women’s formula, and can be purchased at any drug store; however, Umar did assert that it only works in about 30% of users. He also made mention of Propecia (finasteride), an FDA-approved pill attained only by prescription. For people with hair loss too extensive to be improved through medication use, surgical hair restoration is another option.
