Attitudes Towards Hair Loss & Restoration

Hair restoration, money or friends which is worth more to you ? The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) wanted to better understand people’s attitudes towards hair loss.. They conducted an online survey back in 2008 and published their findings in spring of 2009. Although this was a few years ago, the economy was in a particularly weak point at this time.  Therefore, the final responses on hair restoration worth, really showed how important it was for individuals to restore their hair. But besides the issue of personal attractiveness, stiffer job competition may have also been a factor.

Hair restoration, money or friends which is worth more to you ? How Men and Women View hair loss

1407 people with hair loss took part in the ISHRS survey. And 59.8% of these respondents expressed the sentiment that they would rather have more hair compared to money or friends.

The researchers also looked at differences between the responses of men versus women within this group. 59.1 percent of men expressed the importance of hair over the other two choices.

However, 64.2 of the females said that hair was more important to them than money or friends.

While these attitudes may seem illogical at first, hair restoration surgeon, Dr. U fully understands the personal experience of losing one’s hair. The consequences affect one’s social engagements, emotional wellbeing and overall self concept.

Hair and Job Searches

As companies have cut back on spending, many people find themselves having to compete with even more job seekers.

And having a youthful looking appearance is often considered to be more advantageous to a person’s professional image, overall marketability, and confidence explained ISHRS president, William M. Parsley, M.D, in response to the perspectives shown in these indirect markers of  hair restoration worth.

Other studies showed that spending on treatments for restoring hair along with other forms of cosmetic procedures remained fairly high despite the economic slump.

hair restoration, money or friends which is worth more to you ? Attitudes and Responses to Hair Transplantation

Dr. U has noticed that more people are adopting an open  attitude towards hair restoration and even other forms of cosmetic procedures. In more recent years, advances in tools and techniques have enabled more patients to experience extremely natural looking results.

In the past, individuals generally chose to keep their treatments a secret. Now there a greater sense acceptance towards hair surgery and minimally invasive procedures like Botox, fillers and lasers. Due to the positive responses that people generally receive from family and friends even after they found out about the procedure, patients are able to feel comfortable about disclosing their treatment.

The naturalness of today’s hair transplant results is confirmed by other findings of this study.

(1) When the participants were shown four photos of women, they were asked to point out who they thought had a hair restoration procedure they were not able to correctly discern the patient who had surgery done

(2) When the respondents were shown two sets of photos (four pictures each) and asked to identify the male patient who had a hair transplant done, 60% were not able to correctly identify the patient.

Many of Dr. U’s patient videos feature men and women who agreed to share their results along with their excitement and personal stories about the results they received from their skin or hair treatment. You would not need a hair restoration worth type survey to tell how their lives has been positively impacted by the surgery the had. Of course, some choose to remain anonymous. But it is quite clear that many people have achieved a strong comfort level about sharing their experiences, especially when they look and feel better than they did before.
