A full head of hair represents vitality, youth and beauty in our society. When hair loss, thinning and balding occurs, you may experience negative self-esteem and decreased self-confidence. Before embarking on follicular unit extraction hair restoration surgery it is necessary to treat any form of hair loss, hair thinning or balding is to understand the underlying cause or causes for hair restoration.

Different factors contribute to hair loss in men and women. Men tend to lose hair based solely on genetics. Women typically experience temporary hair loss due to psychological factors and permanently due to aging and hormonal imbalance.

The most common factor in hair loss for men and women is androgenic alopecia, or pattern baldness. However, hair loss can also occur from other underlying medical conditions. When in doubt, contact a hair specialist.

HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY WITH FUE

If pattern baldness is the cause of your hair loss, the most effective method for hair restoration surgery is follicular unit extraction (FUE). FUE is also an option for repairing past hair restoration surgery, as well as other forms of hair loss from accidents or burn incidents that result in bald spots. In these more severe cases of balding or hair loss, body hair transplantation (BHT) is most likely a better solution. BHT expands the traditional donor hair source to the face (such as the beard) and body. It’s an advanced method of FUE.

With FUE hair restoration, your hair is harvested on the scalp by individually removing follicular units and replacing them in areas of hair loss. Follicular units are naturally growing groups of one to four hairs. The units also consist of nerves, a small muscle, sebaceous (oil) glands and the occasional fine vellus hair.

With FUE hair restoration, doctors use handheld tools that “punch out” out individual units from the donor area. The grafts are then transplanted to the recipient area. It is a less invasive way to surgically remove the units, with FUE punches only 0.8 to 1.2 millimeters in size.

Benefits of FUE

  • Ability to harvest more head donor hair if needed
  • Allows more options for donor areas, as with BHT
  • More natural hairline options using different donor sources
  • Less scar visibility
  • Less risk of permanent nerve damage
  • Less invasive surgery
  • Faster recovery time
