Natural Oils & Hair Loss Treatment
Are There Natural Oils Hair Loss Treatments ?
Are There Natural Oils Hair Loss Treatments ? As a world leading hair restoration specialist, Dr. Umar is often asked if there are any oils that can actually address hair loss. It seems that more people are becoming interested in natural ways to prevent or treat all types of health conditions, including thinning and balding. Some studies do show that the use of essential oils or food supplements can help improve hair growth. But before making actual purchases, it is important to gain a clear perspective of what conditions might enable hair loss to benefit from the use of oils.

Natural Oils Hair Loss Treatments : Essential Oils For Regrowing Hair

In June of 2013, Prevention.com briefly discussed a study published in the Archives of Dermatology ( November1998) where essential oils were found to help 44% of patients actually grow more hair.  The specific oils used included:

  • thyme
  • cedarwood
  • lavender
  • rosemary

Jojoba oil and grapeseed oil were used as carriers to help dilute this combination of essential oils. This allows the topical application to be safer for the skin. The subjects suffering from hair loss were asked to massage their scalp with this blend of oils on a consistent basis for several months. At the end of the clinical trial, most of the participants were able to regrow over half their hair. And a few were able to completely restore their hair. It is not clear exactly how the oils were able to achieve this effect. But most likely, they worked to stimulate blood flow to the scalp, increasing the availability of oxygen and other forms of nourishment to the follicles.

Natural Oils Hair Loss Treatments : Pumpkin Seed Oil for Hair Loss

Recently, South Korean researchers have found that the consumption of pumpkin oil (as a food supplement) may also offer promise as a hair loss treatment. Their study was performed on men with moderate forms of pattern baldness. Two gel capsules were taken each day for up to six months.   44% of those who took the pumpkin seed oil experienced minimal to moderate growth. This was significant compared to 7.7% of individuals in the placebo group.   Researchers believe that pumpkin seed oil is capable of blocking the 5-alpha-II-reductase enzyme which converts testosterone into DHT. Lower DHT levels in those who are genetically prone to baldness will reduce the likelihood that the follicles will miniaturize. This is a similar mechanism used by Finasteride. However, Dr. Umar wants hair loss sufferers to be clear on the fact that pumpkin seed oil should not be considered as an equivalent alternative.

Are There Natural Oils Hair Loss Treatments ?

Although there are some studies which support the hair growth capabilities of essential oils and pumpkin oil, this does not mean they will work equally well on everyone. According to Dr. Umar, there are many different causes associated with hair loss. For each patient, these should be identified and followed by an appropriate diagnosis from a qualified physician. For example, if hair loss is caused by a thyroid disorder or drug side effects, taking oils may not help. Also, patients with pattern baldness or thinning should be aware that their follicles will progressively shrink until they can no longer produce hair. Therefore the use of oils or any type of chemical treatment can only offer a measure of hope to those in the early or moderate stages of hair loss. Dr. Umar also advises that individuals work with a doctor to address their condition as early as possible. A physician would be able to recommend appropriate time frames for observing the effects of natural treatments, before making other recommendations such as: (1) the use of FDA approved drugs (2) hair transplantation (the only permanent solution to hair loss) Also, certain oils should be avoided in individuals with pre-existing conditions: (1) Rosemary oil is not recommended for those with high blood pressure (2) Citrus fruit oils such as grapefruit or lemon can be harmful for sensitive skin Therefore, a doctor can help patients become aware of these or other risky issues. Addressing hair loss should not be a DIY endeavor. A trial by error approach can be costly in terms of time and finances. Again, decisions should be based on understanding causal factors as well as observing how fast an individual’s hair loss occurs.
