What is Normal Hair Loss ?

What is Normal Hair Loss ?
higher than average hair loss may be caused by a variety of factors ( image: Flickr- Creative Commons )

The average human head has around 100,000 hair follicles. On average, blondes have the highest density of hair: 140,000 hair follicles, redheads the lowest at 90,000 follicles and those with black hair have on average 110,000 follicles. It is normal to lose up to about 100 hairs a day although too much brushing, hair rubbing or excessive washing can add to this.

Obviously, there is no way to count how many strands of hair you actually lose everyday. Nevertheless, your daily hair care routine cannot be the cause of excessive hair loss, and if you are experiencing excessive hair loss, it will be because of some other underlying causes such as genetics, medications, or age. Under normal conditions new hairs grow to replace each hair that has been shed, keeping the average number of growing hairs about the same at all times. Hair loss may involve many unknown factors, however, healthy hair is part of the overall good health of any person and is directly related to healthy conscientious nutrition.

Excessive hair loss over a long period is called alopecia. Baldness in men (Androgenetic alopecia) is very common and is also known as male pattern hair loss or baldness. Hair loss may increase with age but male-pattern baldness is not abnormal, or a sign of abnormality, it simply suggests that your pattern of hair loss is, like 95% of hair loss, genetically pre-determined. If you have hair loss that is excessive and do not know what is causing it, talk to a hair specialist or doctor. A doctor can determine why the hair is falling out and suggest a treatment that will correct the underlying problem, if necessary. At the Derm Hair Clinic in Los Angeles, a board certified hair specialist and dermatologist will be able to answer your questions and help you determine the right treatment for your hair loss situation.
