Surgical Removal of AKN Bumps
Before and After Surgical Excision For AKN Bumps on Back of Neck

Acne Keloidalis Nuchae is a condition where hair follicles become inflamed. This occurs on the back of the neck. The inflamed tissue first appears as bumps on the back of the neck which look like acne pimples. They become itchy and get larger. Pus and bacteria accumulate, adding to the discomfort felt by the patient.  In the most severe forms, the lesions join together, forming a huge mass.

Non-Surgical Forms of Acne Keloidalis Nuchae Treatment

Medications may be used to help alleviate the inflammation and to kill bacteria. However, this approach will not get rid of the bump(s).

The use of the Nd:YAG laser also offers a less invasive form of treatment. However, this intervention would only be applied for milder forms of AKN where ingrown hair has been determined to be the cause of the inflammation. The applied energy would work in the same way as a laser hair removal. After dislodging the hair, it is possible to flatten and soften the lesion.

Surgical Removal of AKN – Patient Before and After Pictures

Patients are most interested in getting rid of the tumor mass in its entirety. Perhaps the most distressing aspect of having Acne Keloidalis Nuchae is the embarrassment caused by the lesions. Individuals often withdraw themselves from social situations and avoid going out in public as much as possible.

The condition of the patient shown in these images had not completely eventuated into a single enlarged tissue mass, which occurs in the most severe states of the condition. Still, the only reliable Acne Keloidalis Nuchae treatment to actually remove the lesions was through surgical excision.

Wound closure is critical in the post surgical healing phase. It prevents possible recurrence of the Acne Keloidalis Nuchae.

However, some doctors will choose to let the skin on its own following the excision. Closing the edges of the wound right away can cause the patient to have restricted ability to move their head. Excision, after all, reduces the original surface area of the skin.

Dr. Umar uses a special technique which enables the final wound to completely close on its own over time. A linear scar is the result.  Dr. Umar is able to deliberately position it so that it aligns with the posterior hairline so that it looks as inconspicuous as possible.

With the AKN lesion complete gone, patients often feel that they have a new lease on life. They are able to go to the places they want without fear of others staring at the back of their neck. And, naturally they regain their sense of confidence and freedom.
