Is there a link between stress and hair loss?
When discussing the connection between stress and hair lossmedical experts typically distinguish between ordinary life stresses and physiological stress. Most of us deal with events that cause us to feel pressured, annoyed or worried. However, these will not necessarily affect the hair follicles unless these events are accompanied by physiological changes which upset the body’s normal state of balance. Here are some examples:

(1) a person’s state after surgery

(2) getting  less sleep

(3) eating less than usual

Stress and Hair loss: Hormonal Basis

However, prolonged environment stress (i.e. work pressures, going through a) can cause the body to release more stress hormones which can affect the normal functioning of hair follicles. A greater percentage of hair can go into a resting state called telogen effluvium. This is most likely temporary, but it can also be permanent depending on the individual’s genetic predisposition to pattern baldness.

Internalized stresses in childhood has been linked to the onset of autoimmune hair loss called alopecia areata. Children often respond to domestic stress at home, inter parental dynamics by loosing hair in patches.

According to Dr U, Hair loss due to stress would often onset 3-6 months after the event.

Treatment should in addition to indicated medications include removal of the mitigating stressors as well as relaxation and stress coping exercises and counseling
