PRS GO Publishes Leg Hair For UGraft Eyelash Transplant : The PRS GO (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open) is a peer reviewed international, open access medical journal and one of the foremost leading journals in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Umar’s study, entitled, Eyelash Transplantation Using Leg Hair By Follicular Unit Extraction mid March 2015. It describes the outcomes of two eyelash hair transplant patients:

  1. 20 year old female who received leg hair grafts in her  upper lash line
  2. 35 year old female who had nape hair follicles inserted in  her lash line.

Both experienced amazing growth by the third month following their procedure. However, a few notable occurrences were observed in the use of leg hair.

  1. Due to its slow and limited growth (maximum 1.5cm), the patient only needed to trim her eyelashes about every 5-6 weeks as opposed to every 2-3 weeks, which was reported by the other patient.
  2. The use of a curved insertion needle to create a natural self sustaining curl eliminated the need to undergo monthly perming.

In both patients, the cosmetic scarring which result from their leg extractions were insignificant and visually negligible.

The two women who underwent these procedures for their eyelash transplantation had given written consent to use their photos.

The demand for long, beautiful eyelashes has spawned a vast array of consumer solutions, including many types of mascaras, varieties of false eyelash strips and even the professional application of individual extension fibers to elongate the hair strands. Although women now have more choices for addressing their eyelash loss, there is nothing like the freedom to actually grow one’s own set of desired lashes naturally. Hence, eyelash transplant surgery can compensate for one’s limitations in their genetics. But now, this procedure is experiencing a new type of evolution. Earlier this month, the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Open published Dr. Umar’s work which represents the world’s first documented use of leg hair as donor grafts for longer lashes.

PRS GO Publishes Leg Hair For UGraft Eyelash Transplant : Why Leg Hair?

Leg hair has several characteristics which make it a very close and comparable match for eyelashes.

  1. It has a thinner caliber that is very similar to natural eyelash hairs, much more so than head hair.
  2. The growth rate of leg hair is slow. And it is able to reach a maximum length that is similar to real eyelashes
  3. Leg hair is rather malleable and able to sustain a curl much easier than many other forms of hair on the body.

It may seem like a very simple concept to select thinner hairs in order to replicate realistic eyelashes and other features where finer hair tends to grow. While this sounds very plausible in theory, implementing this idea in actual practice has been fraught with two primary challenges:

  1. sharp and often unpredictable growth angles
  2. need for cosmetically unnoticeable scarring on highly exposed surfaces like the legs

To overcome these barriers, Dr. Umar worked with an engineering team to design unique punch instrumentation for safely extracting many different types of hair throughout the body. This is how his signature UGraft device  was born. Learn more about the features of this surgical technology here.
