Q. Are the methods used for eyebrow transplants any different from those used for hair restoration on the scalp?
A. The techniques for eyebrow hair transplant procedures have actually been derived from head hair restoration procedures.  They include two forms of extractions:

(1) strip

(2) Follicular Unit Extraction

In strip procedures, narrow slivers of skin are removed from the lower regions of the scalp. Follicles are taken from these sections. They can be used as grafts for the eyebrows or thinning/bald regions on the head.

In Follicular Unit Extraction, tiny punches are applied to remove between 1-4 follicles. These can be used for the brows or the head.

One of the main objectives of hair transplantation is to recreate the look of natural hair growth.  In eyebrow transplants as well as hairline restoration, the ideal type of hair to use is much thinner than the those which grow on the head.  One of the best matches for this level of thinness is nape hair. Dr U is the pioneer of the use of finer nape hair in eyebrow transplantation and has published his work on the subject in the dermatologic surgery journal. He is also the pioneer of the use of finer body hair in eyebrow transplantation

In an eyebrow transplant procedure, the follicles are inserted at very sharp angles to create

a flat appearance. These hairs will grow long and require trimming as needed. The insertion angles of head hair restorations are closer to 90 degrees.
