Dr. U’s Groundbreaking Study on Creation of Natural Hairlines and Temples Using Nape Hair Featured In
Study on Creation of Natural Hairlines and Temples Using Nape Hair : The Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the number one Aesthetic Surgery publication in the world, has published Dr. Umar’s article about his study on the use of donor hair from the nape and peri-auricular areas by UGraft Follicular Unit Extraction ( FUE ) method of hair transplantation to creating softer looking natural hairlines and temples. In the article Use of Nape and Peri-Auricular Hair by Follicular Unit Extraction to Create Soft Hairlines and Temples: My Experience With 128 Patients Dr. U discusses the success rates of the procedure and high patient satisfaction.

The findings from Dr. U’s research study on 128 male patients sheds light on new information which challenges the conventional paradigm (on using thinner hair outside the SDA) and supports a new view that in selected candidates, finer grafts from the nape and peri-auricular areas can indeed serve as a viable resource for hair restoration surgery and a tool for creating a softer looking natural hairline that would be more difficult
to detect as transplanted hairlines.

Study on Creation of Natural Hairlines and Temples Using Nape Hair

Dr U’s efficient use of nape and perifollicular follicles is made possible by the use of his patented UPunch and UGraft technologies for FUE, since nape hair extractions are typically more challenging compared with SDA follicle extraction.

The findings from his study represents a new stride in the evolution of hair restoration, allowing patients to enjoy the satisfaction of possessing the realistic quality of truly natural looking hairlines.

In the article, Dr U describes a new test called the “FUE SHAVE TEST”, that is used for determining good candidates (who have finer hair with potential for long term survival) for this approach and in the process redefines what is considered the SDA in hair transplantation.

Between November 2006 and November 2011, Dr. U performed 128 Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplants. In the study, nape and periauricular (NPA) follicles were used to recreate the softer vanguard hairs along the outer perimeter of the hairlines and temples. In the “FUE Shave Test”, the patients had their heads shaved into crew cuts. In those destined to become severely bald (Norwood level 7 in the baldness scale), clear lines of demarcation are revealed, marking the final wreath of hair around the lower portions of the scalp.

FUE SHAVE TEST

FUE Shave Test Negative Candidate

FUE Shave Test poor candidate
This is an example of a patient who failed the FUE Shave Test. Thus a poor candidate for the use of nape and peri-auricular (NPA) hair as donors in Follicular Unit Extraction. There is a clearly demarcated line between the “SDA and nape area. In this patient, Dr U utilized chest hair to create soft natural looking hairline and temple points.

FUE Shave Test Positive Candidate

Positive FUE Shave Test
This is an example of a patient who passed the FUE Shave Test. Thus a good candidate for the use of nape and peri-auricular (NPA) hair as donors in Follicular Unit Extraction. The shave donor shows a uniform spread of density and hair thickness that gradually trails off into the nape area with no clear line of demarcation between the “SDA and nape area. In this patient, Dr U utilized hairs from the nape and peri-auricular areas to craft a softer natural looking hairline and temple points.

The outcome of soft hairlines and temples may potentially change the way hair transplants are conducted, allowing patients to achieve even greater levels of realistic detail in their results than was previously made possible through conventional surgical approaches. Another advantage of this study is the identification of the increase in the available head donor supply in patients qualified by the FUE Shave test by as much as 3000 grafts in FUE patients.

This patient is one of the cases showcased in the publication. Dr U Used exclusively hairs from the nape and periauricular areas to correct a “Dracula like” sharp widow’s peak using advanced FUE by UGraft. The result as shown in the following photo and then video is a very soft and natural looking hairline:
