Q. Would the use of a cosmetic concealer after a hair restoration surgery be a good alternative to a hat or a toupee ?
Use of a concealer after hair restoration operation could involve wearing a hat, beanie or other type of head covering remains a favorite recourse.

It usually takes up to3-7 days for the newly inserted grafts to become secure. During this time, the recipient area slits will heal and close. And the follicles will become permanently embedded beneath the surface of the scalp. It is usually okay to wear a hat within 24 hours of UGraft surgery completion according to Dr Umar. A clean hat or beanie can be worn after the initial 24hours to hide the signs of surgery. For most people, it takes about two weeks of healing before they can feel comfortable going out in public.

Wearing a hair piece is not advised for the following reasons. There is often a rubber lining which can actually shift the direction of growth for the grafts. In some cases, liquid adhesives are used. As mentioned above, this can lead to unpleasant complications within the skin.

A cosmetic concealer product consists of chemicals and fibers which is not advised for the most part, particularly during the first 7-10 days after hair transplantation surgery. The skin is still very sensitive in both the donor and recipient areas. Therefore the use of concealers or and many other chemicals (e.g. hair dyes, bleaches etc.) can lead to irritation or even inflammation.

Additional Self Care Timeframes to Know After A Procedure For Restoring Hair

Many commonplace routines will need to be adjusted or delayed following a hair transplant procedure. Here is a general list of timeframes to be familiar with.

(1) Showering – wait 1 week

The water pressure from most shower heads can have a harsh impact on the scalp, right after surgery. As the hair transplant wounds heal, it is best to cleanse the head gently by pouring water on the head using a bowl or pitcher of water. This can be done over the sink or a bath tub, starting about 24 hours following the operation.

(2) Strenuous Exercise – wait about seven to ten days

Rigorous exercise following a hair restoration surgery can result in swelling on the scalp. Therefore, it is best to wait to take a break from regular exercise regimens (with a possible exception being a walk around the block.) for about a week or so following the procedure. Afterwards, exercise will help to boost circulation. And this can be very beneficial for the hair follicles, as new vessels develop around them

(3) Sun Exposure – wait about three weeks

UV rays from the sun can be very detrimental after surgery while the scalp is still very sensitive. Sunlight can even cause free radicals to form from oxygen molecules. These compounds act as scavengers can lead to deterioration and damage to tissues.

(4) Swimming – wait about three weeks

Chlorine and other chemicals used in swimming pool water can lead to skin irritations. And the use of outdoor pools also exposes the scalp to sunlight, which can result in complications, as mentioned above

(5) Regular daily activities – resume after two to three days

Following a hair transplantation, patients are advised to rest for about two to three days before resuming their normal day to day activities.
