When should I act on my suspicions of hair loss? : According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is quite normal to lose between 50-100 hairs per day. However, you are probably very familiar with what is typical for you. And if you are noticing higher amounts of hair loss than usual on your hair brush, comb, pillow, after showers and baths, you may want to be consider taking action. Taking action can begin with consulting a dermatologist for a confirmation of your suspicions for a problem hair loss. Your dermatologist may use tools ranging from simple history taking and clinical observation to  more sophisticated tests that may include a scalp biopsy. If indeed you have hair loss, your dermatologist would next attempt to determine the cause of it. Causes of  your hair loss may include:

  • Genetics
  • Medical conditions like thyroid imbalances
  • Iron deficiency
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Overdose of Vitamin A
  • Side effects from medications
  • Stress from major surgery
  • Nutritional deficiencies

When should I act on my suspicions of hair loss?

Studies have shown that the average time from when hair loss is observed by an individual to the time they take action regarding treatment is six years. Determining the cause of your hair loss is important for choosing the right treatment. And by seeking help right away (instead of prolonging the issue), you have a much better chance of reversing the signs of hair loss  instead of letting the problem advance to more severe stages.
Thyroid issues, nutritional issues and stress can usually be treated successfully. However, pattern baldness is caused by the progressive shrinking of hair follicles. While early stages may still have hope of reversing these signs,  this is nearly impossible in more severe phases.

When to consider a hair transplant

Hair transplants should be considered if the following non exhaustive conditions have been met:

  • The hair loss is not from an easily reversible or treatable cause
  • The hair loss is not from an active  ongoing disease
  • No contraindications to surgery eg bleeding disorders, wound healing disruptions etc
  • Psychologically and financially capable
  • Hair loss medications have not worked, are not expected to work well enough or are contraindicated
