Rogaine, Propecia, minoxidil, finasteride, surgical hair restoration, strip harvesting, follicular unit extraction, FUE, uGraft, body hair transplant, facial hair transplant, NeoGraft, ARTAS, hair cloning, ACell, Botox. All these words have one main thread of commonality—they are varying treatments, supplements, or tools one will encounter on the path to a hair loss cure.

For men and women alike, the hair may fall out for many reasons. Possible causes include:

  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Poor diet
  • Malnourishment
  • Vitamin deficiency
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Thyroid problems
  • Drug use
  • Infection
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Pregnancy (in women)

Hair loss in men is primarily due to the effects of genetics and DHT

Any of these might be the primary cause, or could be an aggravating factor to the leading cause of thinning hair—pattern baldness, also called androgenic alopecia.

IS THERE A HAIR LOSS CURE FOR PATTERN BALDNESS?

Pattern baldness is a genetic condition. It gets passed down through the X chromosomes, from both the maternal and paternal sides of the family. Inheriting pattern baldness will render your androgen receptors incapable of fending off the damaging effects of dihydrotestosterone. This hormone, more simply referred to as DHT, is a metabolite of testosterone and the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. Once made, it begins attacking and miniaturizing susceptible hair follicles in the traditional pattern baldness areas.

Technically, there is no hair loss cure. Of the 21 million women and 40 million men suffering this condition in the United States, there is only treatment to stop and/or reverse the affects of DHT, to limited capacity, or treatment to replace the hair that was lost. As of now, there is no stopping the passage of androgenic alopecia from the X chromosomes of parents to offspring. Such a hair loss cure has not been discovered yet.

While we await some medicine to treat the genetic source of the condition, there are options to handle the often devastating loss of hair. These options include those listed above, ranging from temporary to permanent and from non-surgical to surgical. Some will find that taking an indefinite daily dose of Propecia suits their lifestyle, while others will find this ritual demoralizing and an overall health risk (studies show Propecia plausibly linked to erectile dysfunction and male breast cancer, among other risks).

For those who opt to pursue a permanent, safe, and minimally invasive hair loss cure, FUE hair transplant is often the greatest reprieve. In the hands of a highly skilled and widely practiced surgeon, FUE leaves cosmetically acceptable scarring and yields high long-term growth rates. With Dr. Umar’s advanced FUE using his signature uGraft, hair transplant at DermHair Clinic may incorporate the use of non-head hair, thus creating a hair loss cure even for the severely bald.
