Exploring Hair Loss Concealers as Temporary Solutions
Exploring Hair Loss Concealers as Temporary Solutions : While useful for special occasions, hair loss concealers are not a permanent way to treat hair loss. The constant maintenance is time consuming and they require proper application for adequate results. Other drawbacks include being messy, not waterproof and possible detection in sunlight.

Exploring Hair Loss Concealers

The most popular commercial brands of hair loss concealers on the market are Toppik, DermMatch, COUVRé, and Nanogen.

Toppik

Topikk is shook like a powder over areas of thinning hair and loss. These minuscule Keratin fibers bind to existing hair and color match within seconds. Fibers are also magnetized with static electricity for a secure bond resistant to rain, wind and perspiration. Topikk is $21.95 for 30-day supply; five colors are available. Additional Keratin-based products for additional thickening and fullness are also available.

Nanogen

Nanogen is also Keratin-based hair loss concealer used to create the appearance of fullness. It’s applied in the same method as Topikk, with fibers magnetically binding to the hair from root to tip until the hair is washed. Available in 10 different colors, it’s $25.95 for 15 grams. The company also sells nutritional supplements, hair serum and additional products.

DermMatch

DermMatch employs emollients and botanical ingredients to color the scalp and bind to hair for the appearance of fullness. An applicator tip applies the hard-pressed formula to shade areas of baldness and hair loss. The formula’s thickening properties also bind to surrounding hair for increased volume. Hair is then brushed to evenly distribute the product. Available in eight colors to mix and match; each disk is $47.

COUVRé

COUVRé is a lotion-based masking formula to minimize the appearance of hair loss. The tinted hair loss concealer is not greasy or sticky, and it will not block pores. Available in five colors, it’s applied with an applicator on the scalp to shade the scalp in areas of hair loss and baldness. COUVRé $21.95 for 60-day supply

Permanent Results at a Comparable Cost

If a patient used $20 of one of these hair loss concealers per month for the next 20 years, costs would add up to $4,800. This is a considering factor for why hair transplantation is a better way to treat hair loss. In addition to the long-term cost of use, the time used in applying these products is immeasurable.

For $4,800, most patients could undergo a follicular unit extraction surgery from Dr. Umar with 600 grafts. This is the approximate number of grafts needed for moderate hair loss. A handheld tool that “punches” each follicular unit in the scalp donor area is used in this procedure. The grafts are then transplanted to the recipient area. It’s a minimally invasive procedure with permanent results.
