Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is any test required to determine if Your head
or body hair hair can be extracted by SFET?

No. All hair types can be successfully extracted by SFET regardless of skin type with absolutely no need for any kind
of testing. Hair from any part of the body can be extracted intact and used as needed.

2. How big is a session?
A session can be as big as a 15,000 graft transplant procedure. This can be done over a series of back to back work days. Depending on your hair characteristics 800-1500 BHT or SFET - FUE grafts can be transplanted in a single day.

3. Is it painful?
The entire procedure is done under local anesthesia with the patient awake and often watching a movie. Pain is minimal both during and after this minimally invasive procedure. Typically, a mild oral sedative is given before the procedure. Most patients do not require a pain killer after the procedure.

4. Where is the procedure performed?
It is performed in the procedure room of the Redondo Beach office of Dr Umar in a most relaxing atmosphere.

5. I am a very young patient (Late teens to early twenties), am I a good candidate.
Because SFET on head or body (BHT) do not leave a linear scar that runs from ear to ear as is the case with most other types of hair transplantation, many have the assumption that patients of all ages can now go for hair transplantation at will without heeding certain precautions.

The problems are many fold:

(1.) At this early age patients with a significant degree of hair loss are probably going to progress to a severe balding state in later life. Unfortunately there is no way to predict the extent of the future baldness or the rate at which it would occur. Even family history of balding patterns cannot be used as a yardstick with certainty.

(2.) At this age most are not certain of the hair styling options they would come to adopt with advancing age. Additionally, for most individuals at this age, financial stability is an issue. Hair transplants cost a lot of money.

(3.) A hair transplant quick fix of a receding hairline for instance would leave the patients with an odd look as an isolated horse shoe (for full hair line implants) pattern or devils horn (for temporal recess filling) become evident with advancing
hair loss. Because of this factor, young patients must understand that future transplants are often necessary else an odd look may result in the future as the hair loss advances.

(4.) If SFET allows me to shave it all off, if in the future I decide not to have further hair transplants, why the hesitation to just do the hair transplant? Yes, FUE patients have the option of shaving their head in the event they refuse to continue with further transplant (at least they have an advantage over the patients with strip scars from strip type of hair transplantation). However, the patient that develops an odd look in the grafted area owing to progressed hair loss, would necessarily have to shave his head off at all time, because the oddly located hair would become evident if allowed to grow. While this may not be an issue for the majority of individuals, it is still noteworthy. Avoiding a strip scar still presents a huge advantage as the grafted hair can be address by other means such as laser hair removal and electrolysis.

6. Are female patients good candidates for SFET using head or body hair (BHT)?
Female patients often would require investigation for other treatable causes of hair loss. This requires the input of a skin and hair specialist (a dermatologist). Dr. Umar is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology, and is qualified to manage female patients with complaints of hair loss. Dr. Umar often receives referral of female patients from other physicians including other hair transplant doctors who are not certified dermatologists. Dr. Umar may require performing some tests to determine the cause of your hair loss and the best treatment options available.
