Acne keloidalis nuchae, is an unusual condition thought to be one of the main causes of cicatricial alopecia, or scarring alopecia. AKN has a yet undetermined pathology, but is seen most common amid African American men. It is believed to have a cause and effect relationship with the friction that results from short haircuts (from the frequent strokes of a razor or a shirt collar rubbing, etc.).

It starts out looking like small razor bumps on the back of the head or nape of the neck and develops into keloid-like masses. These tumescent plaques cause permanent loss of hair and scarring in the affected area. The only way to effectively get rid of AKN is through surgical excision.
