Getting a hair transplant is a big deal for men, and an investment as well. Sadly, just like a stock investment, not many hair restoration patients take the time to really research or look into the actual procedure they will undertake themselves. Looking for a good price, they do not realize what they really are in for. Scarring and a bad hair transplant occur more often than not, and a great solution is Follicular Unit Extraction. Unlike the strip method of surgery, every graft extraction done under the FUE hair restoration procedure is a surgical procedure and, in most parts of the United States, it is actually illegal for unlicensed personnel to perform this surgery.

Some hair transplant clinics use methods that can do more harm than good to patients. Some doctors use machines to virtually vacuum out the hair grafts, literally air drying the grafts to death in the process! The result is the harming of grafts from the desiccating effect of thevacuums, risking viability in the process. Luckily, respected and trustworthy hair transplant clinics do exist. Dr. Sanusi Umar one of the pioneers of new hair restoration methods such as Body Hair Transplantion, uses no stitches and no technicians to perform FUE hair transplantation.

Dr. Umar adheres to the philosophy that describes all FUE extractions as being a surgical procedure and done with the utmost care. If you are a prospective patient researching an FUE type procedure, ask about the qualifications/licensure of the personnel extracting your grafts before the surgery takes place. It is important to find out if vacuum integrated devices are used in the extraction process and whether grafts are transported through tubes at high speed. The process of performing FUE extractions for the hair transplantation is very tough and detail oriented, and therefore it needs to be done with utmost care and accuracy by a skilled and experienced hair surgeon. For more information on FUE, please contact Dr. Umar at the DermHair Clinic in Los Angeles at (310)318-1500, or please visit http://www.dermhairclinic.com

Traditional Strip Surgery hair transplants have a history of leaving a lot of scarring. With new modern hair restorationtechniques, visible scarring can be fully eliminated using Follicular Unit Extraction. Hair transplantation procedures that use follicular unit extraction fully are known to leave no linear scarring. Older techniques like the strip type HT also called FUT, FUHT usually leaves a “smiley face” scar along the back of the head, from ear to ear. The hair transplant procedure for Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) leaves tiny scars that are virtually undetectable and allow patients to use many hair styles, including short hair.

When traditional strip surgeries, or current methods of hair transplants are done by a poorly skilled doctor, scarring may be very excessive and may present a cosmetic and visible problem. The scarring may be due to hair or be the cause of a thick and large donor area scar. For example, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) leaves barely visible scars that are multiple tiny round white scars in the donor area, one for each extracted follicular unit. Generally, these scars are undetectable and are of no cosmetic consequence to the patient. Keep in mind that every time the skin is cut, no matter how small the cut it, it will produce a scar. Therefore, FUE scars can still be seen when the scalp is shaved.

The characteristics of female pattern baldness hair loss differ from typical male pattern hair loss due to the pattern in which hair is lost. The most recognized hair loss pattern is the common type seen in men, where the hair loss occurs on the temples and crown. Female pattern hair loss however diffuses across the top of the head, and eventually become invisible peach fuzz. This is because instead of having the hair follicle completely stopped in its hair cycle, the hair loss seen in females happens when the affected hair is loss, and the root still grows but instead is replaced by a shorter one, which creates the peach fuzz. Female and male pattern baldness hair loss also differ from each other in that the hormone and enzyme receptor sites are different in various areas of the scalp. In addition, another main difference important difference is that male hair loss pattern is typically always due to a genetics and inheritance along with the aging factor. For women, hair loss can happen at any time and under any conditions that could exaggerate hair loss. For both men and women though, underlying health conditions can also influence hair loss, even if androgenetic alopecia is diagnosed as an actual cause.

Individuals can experience female pattern hair loss as early as when they reach puberty, which could be due to hormone imbalances during the phase. Hormone imbalances are a major cause for female pattern hair loss and can occur especially after pregnancy or after a period of sudden physical or psychological stress that the body endures. Therefore, if you feel like you are losing hair due to hormonal problems, consult with an experienced hair doctor in order to evaluate the hormone imbalance and receive advice on how to slow down the hair loss.

Dr. Umar is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology, and is qualified to manage female patients with complaints of hair loss. Dr. Umar often receives referral of female patients from other physicians including other hair transplant doctors.. Dr Umar may require performing some tests to determine the cause of your hair loss and the best treatment options available.

Dr. Umar performs hair transplantation using very tiny devices to prepare the recipient areas with slits or holes into which the donor hair units are implanted. These tiny holes are created in the most minimally traumatic manner that makes the healing course rapid after the hair transplant. Because of the microsurgical technique used by Dr. Umar and his unique approach of hair transplantation of using body hair (BHT) extractions, the hair transplant will ensure the smallest wounding process, and healing for patients has been very remarkable. Patients are often able resume their daily lives and most normal activities the very next day. The time for which the signs of surgery are completely gone has ranged from 3 weeks to 4 months.

The head donor area typically shows no sign of surgery within a week of surgery. Typically, Dr Umar’s Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer (SFET) patients can sport a crew cut hair style since the signs of surgery are barely visible.

Traditional transplants, such as strip surgery, require the redistribution of permanent hair from the back and sides of the head. This limits the donor supply to 5,000-7,000 hair follicles. In a significantly bald individual, only one tenth of the hair that has been lost can be replaced using this source. The result of the appearance of the hair transplant is often thin and cosmetically unappealing when this limited amount of donor hair is used. In addition, traditional hair transplantation requires the cutting of a slice of flesh from the back and side of the head. The result is a linear scar that can potentially widen overtime. The patient is forever forced into a lifelong self conscious struggle to hide the scar. SFET is linear scar free and minimally invasive. SFET thus allows for hair to be safely removed from anywhere on the head, face and body and transferred to the balding areas that need hair restoration.

The SFET procedure has been pioneered by Dr. Sanusi Umar, and in over half a decade he has performed many hair transplant cases, successfully. For more information, please contact Dr. Umar at the DermHair Clinic in Los Angeles at (310)318-1500, or visit http://www.dermhairclinic.com

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant method that involves donor harvesting where the doctor uses a small punch, .8mm to 1 mm in width, to individually extract each follicular unit from the donor area and transplant them to balding areas of the head. FUE was developed as a response to avoid scarring in the donor area that typically is always a result with strip surgery. Therefore, with the advent of Follicular Unit Extraction, the extraction of individual grafts with a small micro punch leads to the avoidance of a linear scar on the back of the head.

FUE is beneficial for patients who want the option of having very short hair, like a buzz cut, while being able to not show any signs that they had a hair transplant. With strip surgery, even if a patient had his head shaved, a linear scar will be visible even if it is very fine. However, with FUE, after the areas of donor extractions heal, it is very difficult to see any scars or signs of incision, even if the hair is cut very short.

Young patients with a significant degree of hair loss at an early age are probably going to progress to a severe balding state in later life. Unfortunately there is no way to predict the extent of the future baldness or the rate at which it would occur. Even family history of balding patterns cannot be used as a measure with certainty. Therefore FUE will be advantageous for young men need only a small number of grafts in the hairline with the future degree of their hair loss unknown because with FUE they have the option of shaving their head instead of undergoing more hair transplants if their hair loss progresses in the future.

In addition, patients who have already had strip surgery will probably have a lack of donor hair due to previous donor hair decimation from strip harvesting. FUE can solve this problem because the technique allows for the opportunity to obtain more grafts from other areas of the body (Body Hair Transplantation). The FUE hair transplant procedure has continued to advance, becoming more minimally invasive as the graft incisions become more smaller in size. The FUE hair restoration treatment is minimally invasive, meaning that it requires no scalpels, strip surgery or stitches. Scarring and downtime are minimized. Best of all, because the transplant procedure allows for the use of body hair (BHT), and thus the number of transplantable donor hair supply is greatly increased. The newly transplanted hair follicles grow in a natural pattern from the first treatment. Typically, patients will return to a normal life immediately and many have no need to cover their head with a hat ever again.

Harvesting hair from the head donor area and harvesting from the beard have differences that should be taken into account, such as the level of scarring, the ease of extraction of the hairs, and the hair quality.

Beard hair FUE is a scalpel free procedure and does not leave a linear scar, but it will leave small white round scars in the donor areas from where the hair is harvested. These marks are usually hidden in the donor area and are not visible, even if the hair is cut very short. However, these small marks of hair transplantation will be visible if the scalp is shaven. Therefore when the beard hair is used as the donor source for the hair transplant, the patient must continue to have a beard after the hair restoration in order to cover up the faint white marks. The tiny circular scars from the FUE surgery will most likely be visible on a clean shaven face.

FUE performed with beard hair is also different from the process of extracting hair from the scalp because of the greater leniency of working with facial skin. A test prior to the hair transplant is particularly important for a beard hair FUE transplantation because the ease of extraction for an individual should be determined in advance. In addition the texture of beard hair is coarser than scalp hair, and therefore the extraction process and results will be different. Therefore beard hair might be an imperfect substitute to replace scalp hair due to its lack of ability to completely take change into natural scalp hair like appearance and texture.

The technique by which Dr. Umar transplants beard hair, SFET (also known as the “Umar Procedure”), is his advanced version of the procedure commonly referred to as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). The “Umar Procedure” is knife-free, and the protocol has enabled the transfer of hair from the back of the head, body, and beard to the balding areas of the head. This method is significant because it enables the transplantation of body and facial hair (BHT) as well as head hair, which increases the donor hair supply and thus gives hope for many severely bald patients in need of hair transplant repair or additional hair transplants. In addition, Dr. Umar has found the application of body and beard to hair to be also very useful for the treatment of hair transplant reparations.

The procedure is performed at Dr. Umar’s Redondo Beach, Los Angeles office in California at the DermHair Clinic. Dr. Umar is a cosmetic surgeon, and Certified by the American Board of Dermatology in Los Angeles.

An estimated 50 million men (and 25 million women) suffer from hair loss in the United States. Unfortunately for men, high testosterone is one of the main reasons for hair loss, and therefore that is why women don’t have hair loss problems nearly as often as men. Furthermore, some women who have too much testosterone can shed hair in a patterned manner. However, testosterone itself does not cause hair loss. Hair loss is influenced by the transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

The enzyme 5-alpha reductase ( 5 AR) converts testosterone to DHT. The enzyme 5 AR is produced in the prostate, various adrenal glands, and the scalp. DHT acts by binding to special receptor sites on the cells of the hair follicles to cause the specific changes associated with balding. Over time, the action of DHT causes the hair follicle to shed faster by shortening the anagen phase. DHT successively diminishes or miniaturizes follicle size, producing ever weaker hairs. With a steadily shorter anagen growing cycle, more hair is shed with the hair getting thinner and thinner until they become too fine to survive daily wear and tear. Add to this a hereditary predisposition to hair loss, and chances are that over time, the hair will thin and lead to baldness. Genetics plays a major role in the expression of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which converts testosterone to the hair-altering compound dihydrotestosterone, leading to a family trait that has a tendency towards balding.

One should keep in mind that the presence of the necessary genes and hormones are not, in on themselves sufficient to cause baldness. The reaction also requires time of exposure of susceptible hair follicles to the hormone for hair loss to begin. The time required for this to start varies from one individual to another and is related to a person’s genetic expression and sometimes to the levels of testosterone in his bloodstream. When a man experiences male pattern baldness, it appears that the hair follicles on his head have an extreme response and sensitivity to DHT. The follicles get broken to the point that they are no longer capable of producing hair.

Whether or not a hair transplant hurt mostly depends on an individual’s tolerance for pain. Some people handle pain better than others so there are no absolute rules to determine if a hair transplant will be painful. Some say that hair transplant surgery is similar to a visit to the dentist. This does not seem like a description of something that is pain-free, and it certainly does not seem like a relaxing experience.

However, most people are surprised at how little pain there is during a hair transplant procedure today. Some discomfort is to be expected as the anesthetic is injected into the scalp. Once the skin is anesthetized, there is no pain. If the numbing medicine wears off during the course of the procedure, more is injected to re-anesthetize the area. Advances in local anesthetic and the way it is applied allow for a comfortable and relaxing procedure. Most patients watch movies, listen to music or nap during their procedure. If there is pain, it will probably occur the first night, or the day after the procedure is typically the worst. This is even less the case if the FUE (follicular Unit extraction) type hair transplant surgery is done. Taking pain medications prescribed by your hair loss doctor as directed would further make any discomfort minimal.

Hair transplant surgery today is surely less painful than it was in earlier times when larger sections of scalp were operated upon. In Follicular unit extract also called FUE, the procedure is truly minimally invasive with only tiny holes created at each extraction ste. The pain after the procedure is very minimal and the healing is much more rapid. Often only mild redness is seen even when a crew cut is done. In traditional hair transplants also called Strip HT, FUSS, FUT or FUHT ), large nerve branches are liable to being cut during the harvesting of the strip of flesh from the back and sides of the head. When these severed nerves heal, pain syndromes can results either temporarily or in rare instances permanently. In the newer FUE like techniques, individual follicles are harvested directly from the back and sides of the head using tiny punch like incisions. Since no major nerves are cut, the pain syndromes are avoided. Whichever method is chosen, a hair transplant with an experienced and skilled surgeon is an important key to having a less painful surgery. An experienced doctor who knows very well how to perform the procedure will cause you less pain an produce a better result for you and a better experience.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a method of obtaining donor hair for hair transplantation and individual follicular units are harvested directly from the donor area, without the need for a linear incision. It is a new method of harvesting donor grafts that is less invasive than previous techniques. Small round punches are used to extract follicular units from a patient’s bald resistant donor areas. These 1, 2, 3 and 4 hair follicular unit grafts are then transplanted into a patient’s balding areas. In this hair restoration procedure, a 1-mm punch is used to make a small circular incision in the skin around the upper part of the follicular unit, which is then extracted directly from the scalp. The grafts are then reinserted closely together on the bald scalp. The grafts fit into small slits that have been cut into the recipient area. These slits are about 1 to 2 mm in diameter and are completely undetectable once the new hair grows out. The slits heal quite quickly and do not need suturing. This process is repeated until the desired area is covered. Although many implants are made in one session, there may be a need for an extra session to achieve desired results. This allows for equal distribution of grafts resulting in a more natural-looking appearance.

Given the time consuming and tedious nature of this procedure a physician is often limited to transplanting 500 to 600 follicular unit grafts in one day. The disadvantage of FUE is that a patient’s hair in donor area needs to be clipped very short prior to the procedure. The spots where hair units are removed appear as small red dots for a few days, but generally heal fast within the first week after surgery. The other disadvantage of hair transplant surgery using FUE technique is that some patients may not be good candidates for this method; therefore, testing needs to be done prior to hair transplant procedure. Therefore, consult with a hair specialist to determine the best treatment plan for your hair loss condition. At the Derm Hair Clinic in Los Angeles, board certified hair surgeon Dr. Umar will be able to diagnose your individual situation and recommend the best procedure for you take. Please contact the Derm Hair Clinic at (310)318-1500, or visit http://www.dermhairclinic.com for more information.
