The patient shown in this photo had undergone strip surgeries at another clinic years prior to seeing Dr. Umar in Los Angeles. The outcomes of the strip surgeries created problems for the patient with the most severe ridging, a hairline packed densely with large plugs, and strip scars. The patient hid his disfiguring hairline by shaving the plugs and combing the hair of the frontal scalp forward. He was left with his original hair loss problem unsolved and ended up with the state of his baldness even worse than before he had his strip surgery transplant. Fortunately, he found Dr. Umar through the good reviews and words of other patients, and even more so, realized that Dr. Umar was an expert in the innovative method of Body Hair Transplantation (BHT). Therefore, the patient was now presented with the possibility of repairing his poor strip surgery hair transplant, since with BHT, body hair can now be utilized as a substitute for traditional donor hair that came from the back of the head. This allows patients who had head donor hair supply devastated and reduced by the scalpel of the strip surgery to have another means of obtaining donor hair to be used for hair transplantation.http://www.dermhairclinic.com

For this patient, Dr. Umar performed a series of plug extractions to remove the plugging, reduce the ridging and make room for the placement of new natural follicular units in the hairline. Subsequently, the hairline was recreated using head and nape hair. The strip scar was camouflaged with the patient’s beard hair.

It is important to take extreme caution and extensive research before deciding upon which hair restoration surgeon to trust to perform your hair transplant. This is an especially major precaution because it is better to be bald than to end up with an odd look due to having a less qualified and experienced hair surgeon perform the transplant. Hair transplants cannot be reversed after it is completed. For instance, for this patient, even if the entire plugs were successfully removed, the area would still reveal the ridging and irregularity of the scarred pitted surface, which cannot be reversed. Fortunately, with Dr. Umar’s expertise and perfected method of repairing even the worst hair transplants, the patient achieved results that he is extremely happy with, and he no longer has to clip his plugs or resort to creative combing or hide under hats.

Dr. Umar, whom experienced a failed hair transplant when he was young himself, understood the need for a hair transplant procedure that was both minimally invasive and ideal for men and women with different types of circumstances. Follicular unit extraction - FUE is a hair transplant method that involves small punches, .8mm to 1 mm in width, to individually extract each follicular unit from the donor hair area and transplant them to balding hair loss areas of the head, including the scalp, hairline, and crown. FUE was developed as a response to avoid linear scarring in the donor area that typically is always a result with strip surgery. Therefore, with the advent of Follicular Unit Extraction, the extraction of individual grafts with a micro punch leads to the absence of a linear scar on the back of the head, as is customary with traditional strip surgeries.

Single Follicle Extraction Transfer is a minimally-invasive hair transplant treatment that requires no scalpels, stitches, or strip surgery. Scarring and downtime are minimized due to this innovation procedure. With SFET Follicular Unit Extraction, hairs are removed from the back and sides of the head individually, one at a time, leaving very tiny wounds, hardly noticeable, that heal to leave no cosmetically significant signs of scarring within a few days of the surgery, it being an out-patient procedure. The results that SFET FUE produces will allow the patient to be able to style and cut their hair short if they wish, since no scar will be present. Dr. Umar pioneered this process years ago at its infancy while developing his tools, leading to an advanced form of FUE called Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer – SFET, which allows for the use of body hair in transplantation (BHT).This new possibility of body hair transplantation (BHT) has lead to the option and ability of gaining more donor hair supply with body hair for many patients, from many parts of the body including the beard, chest, and arms. Those who have low donor hair supply or have had their donor hairs decimated from previous hair transplant strip surgeries now have a way of finally achieving the hair restoration they really sought. Dr. Sanusi Umar is the top BHT-FUE-SFET hair doctor in the world, and has performed many successful hair transplant cases with his skills, know-how, expertise, and innovative methods.

his patient came to Dr. Umar after having 1,800 grafts transplanted at another clinic using the outdated strip harvesting method, which left his head bald, scarred, and without enough donor hair left on his head for use.

To solve the problem, Dr. Umar used the Follicular Unit Extraction technique to transplant hairs from elsewhere on the patient’s body. In all, 10,000 hairs from his beard, chest and stomach were moved to the damage area, and only about 2,000 hairs moved from his head for the restoration.

The patient knows there’s more to come, but already he’s very happy with the results.

Until Dr. Umar pioneered the use of body hair for transplant needs, patients suffering severe baldness had few options. They could resort to a toupee, or continue trying outdated techniques that already failed them. Now, a new world has opened up, giving patients such as this one hope, and new hair.

The reason for hair loss resides in the genetic predisposition of the hair follicle itself, rather than that of the scalp. Therefore, transplanted hairs will continue growing because the hair follicle keeps its original genetic coding, and thus these are the follicles that are not affected by Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the hormone that causes male-patterned baldness. In addition, despite being moved into a formerly bald area, it still maintains its donor hair characteristics, which is to not fall out and keep regrowing hair. When DHT resistant hair from the back of the scalp is transplanted to the top, it will continue to be resistant to DHT in its new location and grow normally. Immediately after the follicular unit hair grafts are extracted and transplanted into the scalp, the surrounding tissue will begin feeding the transplanted follicle and the healing process begins. The hair shaft may also shed, but the hair follicles will stay and often go into telogen (resting) phase. It is surveyed that hair graft survival rates are nearly 100%, although about 85-90% would manifest above the skin at any given time due to cycling.

Dr. Sanusi Umar, a renowned Los Angeles hair transplant surgeon, is able to use advanced Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) methods to extract hair from the body and hair areas and use them as sources for hair transplantation. This process is known as body hair transplantation (BHT), for which Dr. Umar is the leading surgeon and pioneer in the field. Since areas of body hair are different in both quality and cycling, shortage of head donor supply is an issue of which a hair transplant surgeon should be aware of. The level of hair restoration depends on a patient’s degree of hair loss and their desired outcome.
At the DermHair Clinic in Los Angeles, board certified dermatologist and hair surgeon Dr. Umar is the first FUE-only clinic.

Hair loss for children is a more prevalent occurrence than many would have thought it to be. Currently children’s hair loss is the reason fora approximately 3% of all pediatric office visits in the United States, and nearly 2 million children suffer from at least one form of hair loss or another. The good news is that at least 60% of children with the alopecia condition will outgrow the condition without the need for long term or serious treatment. Cicatrical Alopecia is a form of hair loss that is marked by the scarring of the scalp where the hair follicle is destroyed and replaced with a scar tissue causing permanent hair loss for men, women, and children. Unlike other forms of hair loss, cicatricial alopecia results in scattered bald patches of hair loss and is associated with redness and irritation on the scalp. In some cases, causes of scarring alopecia are linked to severe itching, burning and pain. Sometimes hair follicles, such as around the bald patches, are not completely destroyed and they can regrow. Typically however, the hair does not regrow leaving instead longitudinal scars deep in the skin.

Diagnosis is typically an evaluation of the risk factors of having hair loss as a child, and visual examination of the type of loss will be performed by the hair doctor. Dermhair Clinic a leading hair restoration clinic in Los Angeles can help. Dr. Umar of Dermhair Clinic is a board certified dermatologist specializing in the management of skin and hair diseases. He is a leading hair restoration and hair transplantation specialist. As with any condition, finding a qualified, informed hair doctor to help accurately diagnose and effectively treat your child’s hair loss is the most important. Hair loss symptoms exhibited by your child should be diagnosed by a certified dermatologist. Dr. Umar will be able to diagnose and recommend the best treatment plan to maintain healthy hair for your child.
The patient presented in this video had level 3 hair loss including hairline recession. He came to Dr. Umar in Los Angeles looking for a conservative hair restoration, a natural looking soft hairline, and no linear scarring. Dr. Umar used 1450 grafts derived from the patient’s nape and head to achieve these goals. After 8 months, it can be seen from the video that the hairline is already very soft and natural. The patient states that no one can detect that he has had a hair transplant, and he would have to tell others on order for them to know. Even professional hair stylists cannot even notice that the patient had a hair transplant. The patient also says that there is no donor scarring at all and that he is “very, very happy” with the results.

Hair transplants are usually performed to mimic the characteristics of a NW 2 hairline. NW 2 means that the hairline has thinned somewhat already but still looks natural. The front of a thinning hairline should be very soft, and this softness is rarely achievable by using traditional head donor hair, which are usually thicker and less ideal for the task even if they are single hair follicles, and thus they tend to create an artificial solid line of hair which could look harsh and artificial in real life. Therefore, the soft texture of nape hair makes it the most effective form of donor hair to create the most natural looking hairline. This makes it ideal for the creation of softer looking hairlines, while avoiding the harsh artificial look that is often the result of hairline transplants done by traditional methods. Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer ( SFET ) is Dr Umar’s version of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), the process by which Dr. Umar creates natural hairlines because FUE avoids the problem of creating a linear scar, which is the main issue that results from strip surgery. Such FUE results cannot be replicated with the older follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) method. Veteran hair transplant patients report that at DermHair clinic, FUE hair transplant costs is affordable by California standards. For more information, please contact Dr. Sanusi Umar at DermHair Clinic in Los Angeles at (310)318-1500, or visithttp://www.dermhairclinic.com/

Traditional hair transplants tend to create an illusion of coverage. An illusion of coverage can only be achieved if the hair is kept long, and therefore full hair restoration has yet to be achieved. Cutting the hair on the sides and back reduces the contrast in density between the back-sides and the thinning top. With shorter haircuts, the need for more grafts on the top of the head is minimized. In contrast, keeping a long and dense hair on the side and back maximizes the appearance of baldness on the top and the patient is thus forced to require even more and more hair transplants to increase density to the top in an attempt to match the density of the side and back of the head.

If you have a hair transplant scar from a hair restoration procedure using the follicular unit strip surgery method, you may be caught in this vicious cycle of the strip surgery scar and density issues. Fortunately, with the advent of the Follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure, the patient can now avoid the problem of linear scars. Dr. Umar performs FUE with his own innovative method that he calls Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer (SFET). This hair transplantation procedure will not leave a linear scar because it is a minimally invasive treatment that requires no scalpels, strip surgery or stitches. Scarring and downtime are minimized. With SFET-FUE, hairs are removed from the back and sides of the head one at a time, leaving very tiny punch wounds that heal to leave no cosmetically significant signs of scarring within a few days of the surgery. Therefore, the results that SFET produces will enable the patient to be able to sport a crew cut since no scar will be present. For more information about Dr. Umar and SFET-FUE, please contact DermHair Clinic in Los Angeles at http://www.dermahairclinic.com, or call (310)318-1500.

All hair types can be successfully extracted by Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer SFET regardless of skin type with absolutely no need for any kind of testing. Hair from any part of the body can be extracted intact and used as needed. A session can be as big as a 15,000 graft transplant procedure. This can be done over a series of back to back work days. Depending on your hair characteristics 800-1500 BHT or SFET – FUE grafts can be transplanted in a single day. The entire procedure is done under local anesthesia with the patient awake and often watching a movie.

Pain is minimal both during and after this minimally invasive hair transplantation procedure. Typically, a mild oral sedative is given before the procedure. Most patients do not require a pain killer after the procedure. Some discomfort can be expected when the anesthetic is injected into the scalp. However, once the skin is anesthetized, there is no pain. If the numbing affect wears off during the course of the procedure, more is injected to re-anesthetize the area. Advances in local anesthetic and the way it is applied now allows for a comfortable and relaxing procedure. Most patients watch movies, listen to music or nap during their procedure. If there is pain, it will probably occur the first night, or the day after the procedure is typically the worst. Taking pain medications prescribed by your hair loss doctor as directed would further make any discomfort minimal. SFET-FUE is performed by Dr. Umar in his procedure room at his Redondo Beach Los Angeles hair restoration clinic in the most relaxing atmosphere.

SFET – FUE is a minimally painful procedure since it is scalpel-free and does not require for the removal of a strip of flesh from the sides and back of the head like strip surgery does. SFET is an advanced version of the popular FUE procedure which Dr. Umar has invented and pioneered in.
This is an example of a patient with NW3 level of hair loss who wanted hair restoration using less grafts and with no use of head donor hair. Therefore, Dr. Umar was able to meet his request by using Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer (SFET) method of FUE – BHT to transfer nape hair, beard and chest hair to restore the hairline, temples and frontal scalp, as well as the crown of the patient. The patient is happy with his result, and especially to his advantage, he still has his head hair donor supply untouched.

There are patients who have specific requests for their hair transplantation, as seen in this patient’s case. The patient was aware that even though Dr. Umar is able to utilize non head hair for hair transplantation, he still prefers using head hair donor in restoring his patients. This patient fully aware of this wanted the surgery performed with non head hair. His hair restoration outcome was satisfied since all of his expectations and requirements were met.

Traditional and regular hair transplant methods (often strip) rely solely on the transfer of hair from the sides and back of the head to the balding areas of the head. However, the number of available donor hair is limited by these older methods, leaving only around 5000-6000 hairs (for most individuals). This number of donor hairs is not enough to compensate for the hair loss in severely bald individuals who often would have lost up to 25,000-50,000 hair follicles. When 5000-6000 follicles are used to make up for this hair loss as, would be the case with traditional hair transplantation, it would result in a very thin look.

Using the SFET or the “Umar Procedure“, Dr. Umar is able to expand the available donor supply by adding hair from the beard and body areas into the head donor pool. This makes it possible for even the most severely bald individuals to be restore their head hair globally without sacrificing the crown or settling for an aged higher hairline. The boosted donor supply also implies that a higher density of hair can be transplanted with SFET, in contrast to what can be achieved with fewer follicles with traditional techniques. Thus, SFET and body hair transplantation (BHT) is the best option for severely bald individuals or those with a depleted donor hair supply donor until hair cloning cell based hair multiplication technology becomes available in the future.

Dr. Umar performs BHT using a process he calls SFET or Umar Procedure. SFET is his version of the procedure commonly referred to as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

The patient had a hair loss level NW6. It would be impossible to restore a NW6 hair loss to the extent of NW0 with the traditional strip hair transplantation surgery. A traditional hair restoration strip surgery approach would have relied on only the donor hair that is available in the middle of the back and sides of the head. This would have yielded about 6000 grafts at the most for this patient, and would have been grossly inadequate for meeting the patient’s goals of hair restoration. In fact, many strip surgery clinics would consider this patient as a poor candidate due to his low supply of donor hair, even though this problem is imposed by the strip surgery method.

Fortunately, by using his invention of the Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer method (SFET or the “Umar procedure”), Dr. Umar was able to expand the patient’s donor pool by making beard and body hair as a viable option of donor hair supply. The first SFET-

After Hair Restoration

FUE surgery performed upon this patient consisted of 15000 grafts derived from the head, nape, and chest, which were added to the entire NW6 area and for the creation of a NW0 hairline. The second hair transplantation surgery consisted of 5000 grafts derived from the head, nape, beard and chest hair that were added to the crown, hairline and mid-scalp for density. After the second surgery, which brought the total graft count to 20,000, the patient is ever more confident in keeping a short hair cut because of his newly gained high density of hair in the transplanted area.

The kind of global coverage and density of hair that Dr. Umar restored for the hair loss patient is impossible to attain for a severely bald individual by using traditional strip surgery because of the donor limitations that the older method imposes. With the “Umar Procedure,” the patient has achieved a successful full coverage hair transplant, with even more donor hair to spare in the future for more transplants. SFET Umar procedure is minimally invasive (as evident by the picture), and the patient had a quite relaxed hair transplant experience in the clinic, with patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean. During the whole procedure, he was able to catch up on his business needs on his phone and laptop during his lunch break. A patient is typically sleeping, watching TV or a video of choice during the actual procedure at DermClinic in Los Angeles.
