Hair transplantation is one of the most popular, successful and innovative procedures today, but not many know the history behind the revolutionary procedure that has helped countless of individuals. Hair loss due to disease, scarring and androgenetic alopecia has troubled individuals since the beginning of time.

The first attempts at surgical hair restoration of hair loss was recorded in 1822 by J. Dieffenbach. During his inaugural thesis, he described animal investigations in allo and auto-transplantation of hair, skin and features. As early as 1930, a Japanese surgeon Sasagwa reported hair follicle transplantation, then by 1939, Okuda, a Japanese dermatologist, described the correction of alopecia of the scalp, eyebrows and mustache areas using small cylindrical punches to remove the donor tissue and smaller ones for recipient hair. Japanese physicians were successfully grafting and harvesting multiple and single hairs into other areas of the body including face, scalp and pubic regions. The reports of these procedures were documented in Japanese, but due to the emergence of World War II, the historical hair movement was still not revealed to the public.

However, Norman Orentreich, a New York dermatologist reported hair-bearing scalp autografts from the same person, successfully transplanted from the back of the head to the balding front and top in 1959. One of the focal points of hair transplantation surgery is that donor dominance is the central functional principal. Basically, if the hair follicles are harvested from the scalp and then transplanted into the balding areas, the donor hair characteristics will be dominant.

With this procedure, the concept of ‘donor dominance’ was introduced and the research and evolution of hair restoration surgery had begun.

Several studies on hair loss have shown that the general time between initially noticing hair loss and seeking treatment is about six years. This is definitely more understandable because of the fact that hair loss is on average a gradual process. There is almost always that sad denial stage, and then the phase that patients hope that their hair loss will magically reverse itself and return to it’s natural site. Unfortunately, when looking at the history of hair loss within your family and the hair loss patterns of parents and close relatives, the inevitable is difficult to face. As with any condition, the sooner hair restoration treatment is commenced , the better the outcome. Many patients undergoing hair restoration surgery are becoming younger and younger each year. Starting hair loss treatment early is beneficial for the patient for a variety of reasons.

If you would like additional information about Dr. Umar and his procedures for hair loss, please contact the DermHair Clinic in Los Angeles.

A harsh hairline is common with the older strip method of hair transplantation because it uses hair from the middle and back of your head, which is thickest. This patient has had a good quality hair transplant from a top clinic specializing in the older strip method, but wanted a softer hairline.

Dr. Umar used 1,000 grafts from the nape of the patient’s neck and head to create a more natural look through Follicular Unit Extraction. In the video below you can see the results about one year later.

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that is used to correct androgenic alopecia and various causes of permanent alopecia. Because hair transplantation is surgical by nature, patients must be in optimal health before going into treatment. Some clinics require blood work as a prelude to hair transplantation. Some of the blood work may include the following:

A blood count

Platelet count

Serum chemistries

Bleeding time to determine your eligibility for treatment.

Furthermore, some doctors will check for the presence of human immunodeficiency antibodies and hepatitis B.

As in the instance of any cosmetic surgery, a hair transplantation patient will need to have reasonable expectations. Sadly, depression after hair transplantation often times becomes an issue as a result of unreasonable expectations. During the first consultation, the doctor must learn his or her patient’s intended goal as well as the reason the patient decided to undergo hair transplantation.

What are The Types of Hair Transplantation?

There are various types of hair transplantation, some older, some more popular, and some more effective. In no specific order:

Punch grafting, mini and micro grafts (no longer performed these days)

Strip surgery

Follicular unit extraction (FUE)

FUE using body hair transplantation (BHT)

Regardless of whether the patient chooses FUE or strip surgery, the physician has to consult him or her, putting together the best plan for hair transplantation. By recognizing the underlying source of one’s hair loss, it is easier to target and pinpoint the most effective means of restoration. The patient has to be afforded sufficient time to pose any questions and arrive at a fair understanding of the entire hair transplantation process. As a well-informed patient, you are in the position to select the best medical professional. The best thing you can do as a prospective patient is research, research, and more research. If you are interested in learning more about FUE, hair loss, or hair transplantation, you can schedule a free online consultation with Dr. Umar today.

This is a very sensitive subject and a hard choice to make, which is one of the reasons you will get an array of answers, depending on who you ask. I feel the simplest and most sound decision for a surgeon to make is not to offer treatment to a young patient, period.

While many would argue that this choice does not help the young patient with his suffering because of his early hair loss, this is really not the case.

In choosing whether or not to treat a young patient, it is best to know how traumatized they have been by their hair loss. This could potentially root itself in a lack of self-esteem, depression, and withdrawal. While a lot of men can deal easily with their hair loss, many more can’t bring themselves to ever feel the same again.

Before turning to hair transplantation, young men should first exhaust all other non-surgical resources. The best option for young men seeking hair transplantation is to do what they can to postpone it a few years, perhaps by using available medications. It would be a shame to have hair transplanted only to lose more hair elsewhere on the head.

Have more questions about young men with hair loss? Contact Dr. Umar for a free online consultation today.

How Did FUE Begin?

FUE, also known as follicular unit extraction, is an evolution of the early methods of hair restoration. A Japanese dermatologist in the early 20th century is the first on record to have developed a technology for hair restoration. Since then, there has been scalp reduction surgery, flap surgery, and the first of hair transplantation in the 1950s. Hair transplantation has seen many developments as well, spawning from the pluggy and unnatural-looking punch graft, to the FUE techniques of today.

FUE was first developed in the 1980s, once again in Japan. FUE is basically a refinement of the wide-circumference punch grafting method. Instead of the 4mm round grafts of the 50s, we have tools to make miniscule incisions for extraction. This means FUE scarring is drastically minimized as well, to the point of cosmetic insignificance. But what is FUE?

How The FUE Procedure Is Done

FUE hair transplantation starts with a microscopic individual incision, and goes on to potentially thousands more. These incisions are made in the donor area, to extract the meticulously selected follicular units (natural groupings of between one and four hairs) one by one for transplantation to the balding recipient area of the scalp.

Due to the arduous and protracted nature of such a detailed surgery, FUE requires a more advanced practitioner than some other hair transplantation procedures. Typically, the tool used for extraction is a handheld pen-shaped device, operated manually. Beware of clinics and/or hair transplantation surgeons who push the use of powered FUE devices, like Artas or NeoGraft. Though these FUE devices have gained popularity due to clever advertisement, any sound FUE practitioner will know that they are heavily flawed and will not use them.

<iframe width="490" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_STSE9W3FzQ?rel=0” frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Why FUE Is Superior To Strip Surgery

A common debate among hair transplantation forums, from journals to blogs, is the choice between FUE and strip surgery. Several obvious and conclusive proofs resolve the debate—clearly pointing to FUE as the frontrunner. A few of those proofs are:

FUE hair transplantation does not leave a linear scar.

The microscopic incisions made for FUE result in a negligible amount of scarring.

FUE is far less invasive, which means a faster recovery time.

FUE hair transplantation makes use of specific donor hairs, such as those from behind the ears or nape of the neck, to create a gradual and natural-looking hairline.

FUE enables body hair transplantation (BHT), which vastly widens the donor hair pool.

Those suffering severe baldness, with no donor hair to offer, are no longer considered poor candidates for hair transplantation. BHT puts them back in the running.

This patient’s severe baldness was exacerbated by bad transplants and several failed restoration surgeries done elsewhere. The aftermath:

Several large widened strip scars that wrapped around his head.

Scars in the crown and front from an attempt to suture a wig permanently to his head.

Poorly angled large plugs consisting of five- to six-hairs.

Severe pitting.

Depleted donor supply from his head.

He was told by several hair transplant doctors and clinics that he was beyond repair, and would have to wait for hair cloning or hair multiplication. By the time he came to Dr. Umar, he was desperate.

Using Follicular Unit Extraction, Dr. Umar transplanted over 16,000 grafts from the man’s chest, stomach area, arms and legs, along with 2,000 grafts from his beard and another 1,500 grafts from the nape of his neck.

By the time he was finished, Dr. Umar restored the patient’s receding hairline from and hid his scars, a hair transplant repair that would be impossible to achieve using outdated methods.

Though the technical procedure of Follicular Unit Extraction hair restoration is the same for all, there are some differences between ethnicities only an expert knows to take note of. Generally, Asian people have thicker hair follicles, which can result in the transplanted hairline ending up with a harsh, artificial look. But by using softer hair from the nape of the neck, Dr. Umar is able to consistently create an astonishingly natural look for Asian hair loss.

For this patient, 3,000 grafts were transplanted to create the new hairline. It was such a success that the patient has had a hard time convincing his professional barber that he has indeed had a hair transplant!

Dr. Umar – board certified and with years of hands-on experience – has restored the hairlines of every ethnic group, and understands the individual needs required. Hair restoration is for everyone, as his track record proves.

The patient in this video did not have enough donor hair on his head to meet the needs of repairing his severe hair loss and balding crown.

Dr. Umar used a combination of hair from the patient’s head, body and beard (called body hair transplant) to transfer over 15,000 grafts to the damaged area. Nine months later the improvement was obvious, with fuller hair along the back and sides of his head, and no scars caused by the outdated method of strip harvesting. There’s even plenty of head and body hair left in donor areas should touch-ups be needed down the road.

The patient was also pleased with the style options available to him due to Follicular Unit Extraction; he was able to sport a crew cut without the fear of exposing a linear scar!

The patient presented in this video had severe hair loss, and was not ready to settle for a bald crown and a higher aged hairline that a traditional hair transplantation would have offered. Having estimated that his head donor supply cannot meet his demand for global coverage, he visited Dr. Umar with the hopes of using BHT and the Umar procedure. Using a combination of head, body and beard hair, Dr. Umar was able to transfer over 15,000 grafts to his entire balding area. The result at 9 months (with still more improvement to occur) is fuller hair with the back and sides of the head still looking pristine and not overharvested and devoid of a strip scar that could have limited his hair styling options significantly. After his procedure with Dr. Umar, the patient was able to sport a crew cut without the fear of exposing a linear scar, and even is left with an ample supply of head and body donor hair for any touch ups or to address future progression of baldness.
