Strip surgery is one of the most ineffective ways to restore hair loss. It involves strip mining hair from the sides and the back of the head for transplant to the problem area, but it leaves scarring and lasting pain in its wake. Too, it often leaves you in need of more surgery when the strip method fails to provide a satisfactory solution to your hair loss.

The patient featured in this video came to Dr. Umar after two different clinics left him with painful strip scars along the side and back of his head. Using the Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer procedure to transplant hair from the patient’s beard into his head, Dr. Umar was able to improve the appearance of the scar.

This video presents a hair transplant repair: a solution to strip scars that have resulted from previous strip surgery methods of hair transplantation. Dr. Sanusi Umar uses his innovative Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer (SFET) procedure as a form of Body Hair Transplantation (BHT) to transplant beard hair into two strip scars to successfully improve the appearance of the scar. The patient had undergone prior strip type surgical hair restoration at two separate clinics that left him with two strip scars in the back and sides of his head.

The hair loss patient is often concerned about his receding hairline. When considering hair restoration surgery as a solution the patient is often at a disadvantage being poorly informed.

Strip Surgery Scar: Before

The majority of hair restoration clinic perform only the strip method of hair restoration whereby, a strip of flesh is cut out from the back and sides of the head resulting necessarily in a linear scar that typically runs from ear to ear in the back and side of the head. Often, the patient is told at consultation which is typically done by a “consultant” that might not be a medically licensed that the strip scar is “paper thin”. Thus, the patient is either

not informed or chooses not to recognize the possibility of widening of the scar and the life-long inconveniences the strip surgery portends. Ultimately, the patient with a wide strip scar will have to keep his hair long in order to avoid having the scar exposed, and will remain ever conscious of the wind and water. Swimming is often avoided for this same reason. In addition, patients are often asked by the FUT strip surgery proponents, “Why have a transplant if only to cut the hair short?” This red herring of a statement neglects the fact that to the individual with thinning hair, keeping a short hair cut is key.

Cutting the hair on the sides and back reduces the contrast in density between the back-sides and the thinning top. With shorter haircuts, the need for more grafts on the top of the head is minimized. In contrast, keeping a long and dense hair on the side and back maximizes the appearance of baldness on the top and the patient is thus forced to require even more and more hair transplants to increase density to the top in an attempt to match the density of the side and back of the head. For example, the patient in this photo had undergone the follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) at a clinic in Canada. While the result of the surgery in the recipient area was fine, it still limited his options of keeping his hair short, since he was unable to do so without having the strip surgery scar show. Therefore, Dr. Umar removed the appearance of the hair transplant scar that was vexing the patient greatly by using 1000 beard derived grafts by the process of FUE-SFET.

If you have a hair transplant scar from a hair restoration procedure using the follicular unit strip surgery method, you may be caught in this vicious cycle of the strip surgery scar and density issues. Fortunately, with the advent of the Follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure, the patient can now avoid the problem of linear scars. Dr. Umar is in the forefront of the FUE procedure as well as its advanced form called body hair transplantation procedure (BHT). Dr. Umar has been using facial hair for the purpose of transplantation by using his Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer (SFET) for half a decade after having pioneered the process and inventing special tools for the procedure. He has perfected the FUE-SFET-BHT process with which he has produced results such as which are shown in the picture at his Los Angeles California DermHair Clinic office in Redondo Beach.
Dr. Umar at Dermhair Clinic is the leading FUE Body Hair Transplant surgeon in the world, and a highly respected FUE Hair Restoration doctor, solving the most extreme hair transplant repair cases.. Through the years, many patients have had a series of common questions about the procedure. The following are some of the most common:

Q: Can only certain hair types be used?

A: No, all hair types can be extracted by Body Hair Transplant procedure regardless of a person’s skin type. However, not all body hair is usable. Consult with your body hair transplantation provider on what body hair is usable in your instance.

Q: Is Follicular Unit Extraction painful?

A: Pain is minimal during and after the procedure because it is done under local anesthesia as the patient is awake. Usually, a mild oral sedative is given before the procedure and most patients do not ask take painkillers following a hair transplant.

Q: Why is Follicular Unit Extraction a better choice of hair transplantation than traditional strip surgery?

A: Whereas a traditional hair transplant requires cutting flesh from the back and side of the head leaving a linear scar that can potentially widen overtime, Follicular Unit Extraction is linear-scar free and minimally invasive. Besides other reasons whyFollicular Unit Extraction is the top hair restoration procedure, being linear scar-free is the best advantage.

Q: How long does it take for the hair transplant to heal after a Body Hair Transplant?

A: Because Dr. Umar uses micro-surgical techniques for a body hair transplant, the hair restoration treatment ensures the smallest wounding and healing process. The time it usually takes for the surgery to completely heal ranges from 3 weeks to 4 months.

Q: Are females good candidates for a Body Hair Transplant?

A: Female patients require further testing and investigation by Dr. Umar to determine the cause of their hair loss. From there, he will assess the best possible treatment whether that will include a body hair transplant or not.

Q: Is it okay to have a hair transplant at an early age?

A: Hair loss is a gradual process that occurs throughout a lifetime. If hair loss runs in your family, then losing hair will be inevitable. Despite the cause, the sooner hair restoration is in place, the better. But before doing so, you should discuss your hair loss situation with a specialized hair surgeon such as Dr. Umar before undergoing any treatment, especially a hair transplant such as Follicular Unit Extraction. For instance, if someone at such a young age has a hair transplant, it is very likely he will require another one later on.

On the average, people shed about 100-150 hairs per day. Unfortunately, about one-third of women suffer from androgenetic alopecia, also known as female pattern alopecia or baldness. Female pattern hair loss is seen predominantly over the top and front of the head. In female pattern hair loss, after the hair has shed, the root that grows in its place becomes shorter and shorter. Eventually those hairs become invisible and look like peach fuzz.

Female pattern hair loss can occur due to a number of reasons. It is most commonly seen after menopause and other hormonal changes such as pregnancy or a discontinuation of birth control pills. If women begin to lose a lot of hair throughout their scalp, the female pattern hair loss is due to a change in the normal hair cycle-possibly a short anagen phase or there has been an increase in the number of follicles that enter the telogen phase. Also referred to as telogen effluvium or stress alopecia, a shock to the body’s system can stress the hair’s follicles and create the female pattern hair loss.

Dr. Umar has been certified by the American Board of Dermatology to treat women and their female pattern hair loss. He will begin by running some tests to see what is the ultimate cause of the hair loss, and from there, assess the best treatment available. Becoming more popular, Body Hair Transplant will use SFET to safely remove hair from anywhere else on the body-head, face, legs, etc-and transfer it to the area in need, leaving no scars behind. Having perfected the BHT procedure, Dr. Umar aims to provide his patients with fuller and better hair loss restoration in ways not possible with more traditional hair transplantation. Results seen within approximately 12-18 months, the permanent procedure includes a minimal follow-up and patients are typically released after a year or two. Depending on whether the patient has the appropriate amount of hair and the proper body hair characteristics, he will decide whether to use Body Hair Transplant or other traditional hair transplants.

Hair Restoration is now a process that is becoming as natural looking as ever before. Dr. Umar of Dermhair Clinic has revolutionized the hair restoration field with his “Umar Procedure”, a more advanced version of Follicular Unit Extraction. Old and standard head and nape hair transplantation techniques have involved the removing strips of flesh from the back and sides of the head, which lead to linear scars that are visible and leave a “smiley face” on the back of the head. Yet, the process by which Dr. Umar performs head hair transplantation is linear scar free and is called the Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer (SFET), or the “Umar Procedure,” a more advanced and scalpel free version of the procedure known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). With SFET-FUE, hairs are removed from the back and sides of the head one at a time, leaving very tiny wounds that heal to leave no cosmetically significant signs of scarring within a few days of the surgery. It is an out-patient procedure and patients usually watch movies and can attend to personal matters during lunch time.

“The Umar Procedure” or single follicle extraction and transfer (SFET) is a state-of-the-art hair restoration procedureand Dermhair Clinic results are superior, as patients frequently send praise to Dr. Umar at the continuing growth of hair up to a year after the surgery. The Umar Procedure is a minimally invasive treatment that requires no scalpels, strip surgery or stitches of any kind. The healing process is natural, and Dr. Umar and Dermhair Clinic are easily available to handle any questions or answers anytime. With the Umar Procedure, scarring and hair transplant downtime are minimized, aimed at getting you back to your normal daily routine as fast as possible. Best of all, because the procedure allows for the use of body hair (body hair transplantation, or BHT), the number of transplantable hair is greatly increased, even for those patients with severe hair loss. With FUE-SFET, the newly transplanted hair follicles grow in a natural pattern from the first treatment.

Dr. Umar is the top BHT hair restoration surgeon in the world, and he has performed surgeries that produced results that other clinic or doctor have written off as impossible. He is documented for repairing the most severe hair transplant disaster in the world. For this reason, other highly notable hair transplantation surgeons have referred their cases of BHT to him in his clinic in Los Angeles.

Follicular Unit Extraction is becoming a popular method for hair restoration. If you are experiencing hair loss, during your inquiries via the Internet or library, you have surely come across the term Follicular Unit Extraction or “FUE.” Thus, many people want to know what FUE truly is, and how it works. FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction. Follicular unit extraction is a specific technique used in hair transplant surgeries because of the natural looking result and accelerated post-operation healing. Before the invention of FUE, hair transplant procedures required the doctor to remove a strip of flesh from the back and sides of the head which creates in the process a linear strip of scar that can become visible. This type of hair restoration makes it mandatory for the patient to keep the hair in the back and sides of the head long enough to cover the scarring. Such a procedure additionally opens the patient to a myriad of untoward side effects such as nerve damage leading to numbness or pain, disruption of the harmony of hair on the back and sides of the head, elevation of the neck hairline etc. These side effects are not likely to occur in FUE type procedures.

Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, creates a natural look for patients while minimizing the appearance of a transplant, hiding most if not all of the donor area, and accelerates post-operative healing. Most important to the patient seeking hair restoration is the fact that Follicular Unit Extraction eliminates traditional hair restoration’s most invasive aspect, the surgical removal of a strip of tissue from which the units are taken. Dr. Umar at Dermhair Clinic is a leading hair transplant surgeon specializing in FUE, including new procedures he has helped pioneer such as Body Hair Transplants and Single Follicle Transfer Extraction SFET, or the “Umar Procedure”.

Hair loss is a gradual process that takes most people a while to accept. There is always a period of denial stage, where the victim hopes for the reversal of hair loss and for the miraculous regrowth of their hair. If hair loss is a prevalent issue within your family, then losing hair will be inevitable for you as well. Therefore, as with any condition, the sooner hair restoration treatment is initiated, then the better the outcome in the future. However, it is important to discuss your hair loss situation with a specialized hair surgeon first before undergoing a transplant, especially if you are younger patient. Patients who have hair loss early in life should be prepared for further hair loss in the future, and thus having a hair transplant at the current moment might not be beneficial since the hair loss process has not ended yet. Because of this factor, young patients must understand that another transplant will be necessary in the future or else an odd look may result in the future as the hair loss progresses.

Therefore, it is best to schedule a consultation with an experienced hair surgeon to determine which treatment and procedure is best for you. The procedure used by Dr. Umar at the Derm Hair Clinic in Los Angeles is called the Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer, or SFET (an advanced form of FUE invented by Dr. Umar) and Body Hair Transplant (BHT). These are minimally invasive procedures that are scalpel and linear scar free, performed under complete patient comfort. The whole process is done under local anesthesia and most patients are awake typically watching a movie of their choice during the procedure. Patients are able to take breaks during the process. Lunch is served in the clinic patio setting with a calming view of the Pacific Ocean. Typically a mild sedative is taken orally at the start of the procedure. Pain is minimal both during and after the process. The procedure is done with the patient lying or sitting on our custom made, highly versatile operating table. Many have been taken aback by the degree of comfort in the operating room under Dr. Umar’s care. After the procedure, most patients would not require even ordinary over the counter pain killers.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant method that involves donor harvesting where the doctor uses a small punch, .8mm to 1 mm in width, to individually extract each follicular unit from the donor area and transplant them to balding areas of the head. FUE was developed as a response to avoid scarring in the donor area that typically is always a result with strip surgery. Therefore, with the advent of Follicular Unit Extraction, the extraction of individual grafts with a small micro punch leads to the avoidance of a linear scar on the back of the head.

FUE is beneficial for patients who want the option of having very short hair, like a buzz cut, while being able to not show any signs that they had a hair transplant. With strip surgery, even if a patient had his head shaved, a linear scar will be visible even if it is very fine. However, with FUE, after the areas of donor extractions heal, it is very difficult to see any scars or signs of incision, even if the hair is cut very short.

Young patients with a significant degree of hair loss at an early age are probably going to progress to a severe balding state in later life. Unfortunately there is no way to predict the extent of the future baldness or the rate at which it would occur. Even family history of balding patterns cannot be used as a measure with certainty. Therefore FUE will be advantageous for young men need only a small number of grafts in the hairline with the future degree of their hair loss unknown because with FUE they have the option of shaving their head instead of undergoing more hair transplants if their hair loss progresses in the future.

In addition, patients who have already had strip surgery will probably have a lack of donor hair due to previous donor hair decimation from strip harvesting. FUE can solve this problem because the technique allows for the opportunity to obtain more grafts from other areas of the body (Body Hair Transplantation). The FUE hair transplant procedure has continued to advance, becoming more minimally invasive as the graft incisions become more smaller in size. The FUE hair restoration treatment is minimally invasive, meaning that it requires no scalpels, strip surgery or stitches. Scarring and downtime are minimized. Best of all, because the transplant procedure allows for the use of body hair (BHT), and thus the number of transplantable donor hair supply is greatly increased. The newly transplanted hair follicles grow in a natural pattern from the first treatment. Typically, patients will return to a normal life immediately and many have no need to cover their head with a hat ever again.

Hair loss for children is a more prevalent occurrence than many would have thought it to be. Currently children’s hair loss is the reason fora approximately 3% of all pediatric office visits in the United States, and nearly 2 million children suffer from at least one form of hair loss or another. The good news is that at least 60% of children with the alopecia condition will outgrow the condition without the need for long term or serious treatment. Cicatrical Alopecia is a form of hair loss that is marked by the scarring of the scalp where the hair follicle is destroyed and replaced with a scar tissue causing permanent hair loss for men, women, and children. Unlike other forms of hair loss, cicatricial alopecia results in scattered bald patches of hair loss and is associated with redness and irritation on the scalp. In some cases, causes of scarring alopecia are linked to severe itching, burning and pain. Sometimes hair follicles, such as around the bald patches, are not completely destroyed and they can regrow. Typically however, the hair does not regrow leaving instead longitudinal scars deep in the skin.

Diagnosis is typically an evaluation of the risk factors of having hair loss as a child, and visual examination of the type of loss will be performed by the hair doctor. Dermhair Clinic a leading hair restoration clinic in Los Angeles can help. Dr. Umar of Dermhair Clinic is a board certified dermatologist specializing in the management of skin and hair diseases. He is a leading hair restoration and hair transplantation specialist. As with any condition, finding a qualified, informed hair doctor to help accurately diagnose and effectively treat your child’s hair loss is the most important. Hair loss symptoms exhibited by your child should be diagnosed by a certified dermatologist. Dr. Umar will be able to diagnose and recommend the best treatment plan to maintain healthy hair for your child. For more information, please contact the DermHair Clinic in Los Angeles at (310)318-1500, or please visit http://www.dermhairclinic.
