Eyebrow restoration used to be limited to helping burn victims, but time and advances in technology has seen it evolve into a cosmetic option popular with both men and women looking to reshape and rejuvenate their eyebrows.

Your eyebrow hairs grow from the follicle at a sharp angle, so unlike the hairs on your head, your eyebrow hair is growing flat against the surface of your skin. The growth cycle of your eyebrow hair is also far shorter than that of the hairs of your scalp – about four months, as compared to three to seven years. Unlike your scalp hair, your eyebrow hairs grow as individual strands; there are no follicular groups of hairs in a bunch that can be moved from one area to another. Typically, 50 to 325 hairs are individually moved into the brow during the procedure, another reason a skilled surgeon is needed to perform this delicate task. The hairs must be perfectly placed into tiny incisions that are at just the right angle and direction to mimic natural growth.

Follicular Unit Extraction is an excellent approach for eyebrow restoration, because it involves transplanting individual strands of hair from another part of your body to your eyebrow area, leaving no visible scarring. The new hair will look a little different from your original eyebrows and have a different growth rate, but over time it will begin to mimic your existing eyebrow hair.

The procedure usually takes two hours and is done while you are under a mild sedative.

Many studies done on hair loss show that the general time between initially noticing losing hair and seeking treatment for hair restoration is about six years. This makes perfect sense considering that most hair loss happens gradually over time. An initial stage of sadness and denial is normal, followed by the hope that the hair will stop falling out and hair restoration will take place on its own. However, as hair loss is usually genetic, the victim can easily observe hair loss patterns within his family history and get ready to face the inevitable.

What Are Some Treatments For Hair Restoration?

Propecia is a common finasteride drug used to stop hair loss by fighting the male hormone, DHT.

Hair restoration surgery, such as “strip harvesting” or follicular unit extraction.

False hair, such as hairpieces, wigs, and toupees.

Like with most conditions, early treatment of hair loss is better and will result in more successful results. For this reason, hair restoration patients have started getting younger.

For more information on hair loss or about Dr. Umar and his hair transplant procedures, please contact the DermHair Clinic in Los Angeles.

Sometimes people are born without enough hair on their eyebrows, or got in an accident where their eyebrows have been removed, and need eyebrow restoration. An up and coming procedure that most people do not know about is eyebrow transplants, using a method such as Follicular Unit Extraction. Eyebrow transplants are very different from hair transplants. First off, eyebrow hair grows from a very small angle along the skin. Eyebrow hairs emerge from the follicle at a very acute angle; therefore the hair grows flat to the skin’s surface. Scalp hair, on the other hand, grows at an angle of 45 degrees. Also, eyebrow hair growth cycles are much shorter than scalp hair growth cycles. The anagen growth phase of eyebrow hair lasts only about 4 months, while scalp hair in anagen phase can last anywhere from 3 to 7 years. In addition, eyebrow hairs grow in dramatically different directions throughout the entire eyebrow. The hairs also grow as individual strands with no follicular groups; unlike the scalp, which grows 2 to 4 hairs in follicular groups.

Dr. Umar at DermHair Clinic in Los Angeles, California has created a Follicular Unit Extraction procedure that uses either body or head hair follicles to transplant and in order to reconstruct the eyebrows and enable eyebrow restoration. Unlike hair transplants where the donor hair is taken from another part of the scalp, the donor hair for eyebrow transplants is taken from another part of the body and will therefore have slightly different characteristics in both growth rate and appearance. If they are different, over time the transplanted scalp hair will slowly begin to approximate the growth pattern and characteristics of the existing eyebrow hairs-but it may never match it exactly. Eyebrow transplants using traditional strip method of hair transplants limits donor options to the hair in the “safe zone.” These thick terminal hairs contrast sharply with normal eyebrow hair quality, which is short, finer, and straight. One upside and potential downside with eyebrow hair transplants is that the eyebrow hairs will continue to grow, which may need constant trimming.

DermHair Clinic is the only clinic in Los Angeles that offers this eyebrow transplant procedure, using Follicular Unit Extraction. So be sure to take advantage if you are one person who needs an eyebrow hair restoration.

Harvesting hair from the head donor area and harvesting from the beard have differences that should be taken into account, such as the level of scarring, the ease of extraction of the hairs, and the hair quality.

Beard hair FUE is a scalpel free procedure and does not leave a linear scar, but it will leave small white round scars in the donor areas from where the hair is harvested. These marks are usually hidden in the donor area and are not visible, even if the hair is cut very short. However, these small marks of hair transplantation will be visible if the scalp is shaven. Therefore when the beard hair is used as the donor source for the hair transplant, the patient must continue to have a beard after the hair restoration in order to cover up the faint white marks. The tiny circular scars from the FUE surgery will most likely be visible on a clean shaven face.

FUE performed with beard hair is also different from the process of extracting hair from the scalp because of the greater leniency of working with facial skin. A test prior to the hair transplant is particularly important for a beard hair FUE transplantation because the ease of extraction for an individual should be determined in advance. In addition the texture of beard hair is coarser than scalp hair, and therefore the extraction process and results will be different. Therefore beard hair might be an imperfect substitute to replace scalp hair due to its lack of ability to completely take change into natural scalp hair like appearance and texture.

The technique by which Dr. Umar transplants beard hair, SFET (also known as the “Umar Procedure”), is his advanced version of the procedure commonly referred to as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). The “Umar Procedure” is knife-free, and the protocol has enabled the transfer of hair from the back of the head, body, and beard to the balding areas of the head. This method is significant because it enables the transplantation of body and facial hair (BHT) as well as head hair, which increases the donor hair supply and thus gives hope for many severely bald patients in need of hair transplant repair or additional hair transplants. In addition, Dr. Umar has found the application of body and beard to hair to be also very useful for the treatment of hair transplant reparations.

The procedure is performed at Dr. Umar’s Redondo Beach, Los Angeles office in California at the DermHair Clinic. Dr. Umar is a cosmetic surgeon, and Certified by the American Board of Dermatology in Los Angeles.
Having personally experienced the devastating consequences of a poor hair transplant and scarring after undergoing a surgery done on him as a resident physician, Dr. Umar set out to find a new linear scar free, knife free, and minimally invasive hair restoration solution. In order to accomplish this, he first compared the different procedures for hair restoration. He focused on alternatives to the painful surgery and limitations of traditional treatments for hair replacement. At that time, many alternative treatments were still in the developmental stages and were flawed, so he began to design a new, minimally invasive, hair transplant procedure. Dr. Umar has spent years focusing on the invention and design of tools and techniques which allowed him to develop a successful, knife-free, natural replacement for hair loss.

The result is “The Umar Procedure,” or single follicle extraction and transfer (SFET). This is a more advanced form of the procedure popularly known as Follicular unit Extraction (FUE). This state-of-the-art hair restoration treatment results in rapid healing rates and better overall yield and growth of transplanted hair follicles on the scalp. The Umar Procedure is a minimally invasive treatment that requires no scalpels, strip surgery or stitches. Scarring and downtime are minimized with SFET. Best of all, because the procedure allows for the use of body hair, it allows for the number of transplantable hair or donor supply to increase in availability, giving many hair loss victims new hope for Los Angeles hair restoration. The newly transplanted hair follicles grow in a natural pattern after the first treatment. SFET (a form of FUE) and Body Hair Transplant (BHT) as performed by Dr. Umar is a minimally invasive process that occurs in complete patient comfort. After the procedure, most patients would not require even ordinary over the counter pain killers. Depending on the size of the surgery, as many procedures can be scheduled over the course of several back to back work days. Typically, patients’ returns to a normal life immediately and many have no need to cover their head with a hat ever again. Dr. Umar is a pioneer in FUE, inventor of SFET, and the top BHT hair surgeon in the world.

Conventional head and nape hair transplant methods involve the removal of strips of flesh from the back and sides of the head, which unfortunately results in linear scars that wrap around the back of the head from ear to ear. However, the process by which Dr. Umar performs head hair transplantation is linear scar free and is called the Single Follicle Extraction and Transfer (SFET), or the “Umar Procedure,” which is a more advanced version of the procedure known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). With SFET-FUE, hairs are removed from the back and sides of the head one at a time, leaving very tiny punch wounds that heal to leave no cosmetically significant signs of scarring within a few days of the surgery. Therefore, the results that SFET produces will enable the patient to be able to sport a crew cut since no scar will be present, as shown in the picture.

“The Umar Procedure” or single follicle extraction and transfer (SFET) is a state-of-the-art hair restoration procedure performed by Dr. Sanusi Umar in Los Angeles, and results are superior, especially with its rapid healing rates and better overall yield and growth of transplanted hair follicles on the scalp. The Umar Procedure is a minimally invasive treatment that requires no scalpels, strip surgery or stitches. Scarring and downtime are minimized. Best of all, because the procedure allows for the use of body hair (body hair transplantation, or BHT), the number of transplant able hair is greatly increased. The newly transplanted hair follicles grow in a natural pattern from the first treatment. Typically, patients’ returns to a normal life immediately and many have no need to cover their head with a hat ever again.

Dr. Umar is the top BHT hair restoration surgeon in the world, and he has performed surgeries that produced results that other clinic or doctor have written off as impossible. For this reason, other highly notable hair transplantation surgeons have referred their cases of BHT to him in his clinic in Los Angeles.
